Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, is a painful condition that limits the movement of the shoulder. A frozen shoulder occurs when the strong connective tissue that surrounds the shoulder joint becomes thick, stiff, and inflamed. The joint capsule contains the ligaments that attach the top of the humerus to the shoulder socket, holding the joint firmly in place. The condition is called a "frozen" shoulder because the more pain that is felt, the less likely the shoulder will be used.
